In order to get an accurate reading from a sphygmomanometer, it is important to follow the proper steps. First, the person being tested should sit down with their back straight and rest their arm on a flat surface so that the cuff is at the same level as their heart. The person taking the reading should then inflate the cuff until the mercury in the tube reaches between 160 and 180 mmHg. At this point, the person taking the reading should begin listening for a pulse with their stethoscope. Once they have located the pulse, they should deflate the cuff at a rate of 2-3 mmHg per second. The person taking the reading should then record the reading on the mercury column at the point where they first hear the pulsing sound.

l Locate the air valve and the cuff

l Pump the air valve until the cuff is tight

l Listen for the first sound of the heartbeat

l Increase the pressure until the sound disappears

l Read the dial to get the blood pressure reading

l Locate the air valve and the cuff

1. Locate the air valve and the cuff. The air valve is used to inflate the cuff. The cuff is placed around the upper arm, just above the elbow.

2. Wrap the cuff snugly around the arm, making sure that the bottom edge of the cuff is level with the crease of the elbow.

3. Use the air valve to inflate the cuff until the mercury in the manometer reaches between 160 and 180 mmHg.

4. Once the cuff is inflated, release the air valve and listen with the stethoscope for the sound of the pulse. The pulse should be audible when the mercury is at the level of the artery.

l Pump the air valve until the cuff is tight

To read a sphygmomanometer, first pump the air valve until the cuff is tight. Then, place the stethoscope in your ears and listen for the sound of your pulse. finally, deflate the cuff slowly until the sound of your pulse disappears.

l Listen for the first sound of the heartbeat

Start at the lower number on the scale and begin listening with the stethoscope. As you move the stethoscope up the scale, you will eventually hear the first sound of the heartbeat, which is called the systolic pressure. Make a note of this number.

l Increase the pressure until the sound disappears

If you're using a sphygmomanometer to measure your blood pressure, it's important to know how to interpret the readings. The systolic pressure, or the top number, represents the pressure in your arteries when your heart beats. The diastolic pressure, or the bottom number, represents the pressure in your arteries in between heartbeats.

To get an accurate reading, you'll need to inflate the cuff until the sound of your pulse disappears. The cuff should be inflated to a point where it's just barely touching your skin. If it's not touching your skin, you won't get an accurate reading.

l Read the dial to get the blood pressure reading

To read a sphygmomanometer, start by looking at the mercury column in the center of the device. The reading on the mercury column is the systolic blood pressure, which is the top number in a blood pressure reading. The diastolic blood pressure, which is the bottom number, is read by looking at the mercury column when the heart is at rest between beats.

The systolic pressure, which is the top number, is the pressure in your arteries when your heart contracts. The diastolic pressure, which is the bottom number, is the pressure in your arteries when your heart relaxes.
